Choose a cushion for its intended use
A sleeping pillow has a different purpose from a back-support cushion or a long body cushion. Decide where you want to use it and which shape suits that setting. A cushion intended for sitting upright does not necessarily have the dimensions or construction of a standard bed pillow. Read the individual description and use the photographs to understand the form before choosing.
Compare dimensions and compatible covers
Measure the available space on your bed or chair and compare the cushion width, length and any stated height. For an unusual shape, check whether a compatible cover is included or sold separately. A standard rectangular pillowcase will not automatically fit a round or elongated cushion. Also establish whether you are buying a complete filled pillow or only a removable cover.
Read filling and outer-fabric details
Check the filling composition separately from the outer fabric. Product details may describe shape and finish, but personal preference remains important. Do not choose only by a word such as soft or firm; compare several specifications and the intended application. A pillow is not automatically a remedy for physical complaints. Base your choice on practical use and properties explicitly stated for the product.
Care for covers and fillings separately
Check whether a cover can be removed and which components may be washed. Outer covers and fillings can require different care. Follow the label rather than automatically putting the whole pillow in a washing machine. Dry washed components fully before reassembling them. For a regular bed pillow, match the pillowcase dimensions to the pillow and consider keeping a spare case for laundry changes.
