Choosing a compact desk: measure laptop and legroom

Choosing a compact desk: measure laptop and legroom

A small desk seems ideal for a corner or home office, but may leave too little worktop or legroom. Do not measure only the furniture: your laptop, chair, arms, cables and walkway are all part of the setup. Use these steps to test the space before ordering.

List what stays on the desk every day

Write down what needs to be on the surface at the same time: laptop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, notebook, lamp and charger. Measure them and sketch a simple layout. A laptop alone needs less space than a monitor, keyboard and writing area.

Leave room to rest your arms and open the laptop. A monitor stand or desk lamp takes extra space. A drawer can hide supplies, but check that it will not press against your knees.

Measure chair and legroom together

Measure chair width and how far it moves back. Check the width and height under the desk, including legs, drawer units and crossbars. The tabletop size does not show the clear area for your legs.

Mark the legs with tape or boxes and try your chair. Sit down, tuck in and pull back out. You should be able to move without your knees hitting a drawer or support.

Match working height to your posture

Consider desk height in relation to chair and body. The Dutch Arboportaal recommends adjusting chair and desk so arms can relax, with elbows at or slightly above desk height. This is general workplace guidance; individual needs and chair adjustment still matter.

Adjust the chair first if possible, then assess the desk. Support your feet on the floor or a footrest and keep shoulders relaxed. Desk height alone does not make a workstation ergonomic if chair, screen and posture do not work together.

Choose a spot with suitable light and access

Check where daylight comes from and whether the screen will reflect it. Plan sockets and cables. Keep the route to the door, storage and window clear, especially if the workspace shares a walkway.

A desk against a wall saves space, but check that the chair can move back. A corner desk uses an angle efficiently but may leave less room for a chair or lamp. Map the working zone, not just the desktop edge.

Plan storage and cables

Decide where chargers, paper and accessories will go. A drawer can clear the surface, but check that it opens fully without hitting other furniture.

Measure the route to sockets and keep cables out of walkways. Use cable management that suits the desk and equipment. Check for a cable opening in the specifications; do not assume one from a photo.

Mock up the setup and check specifications

Use tape for the desk footprint and cardboard for legs or drawers, then place your chair and equipment. You can spot a cramped layout before delivery.

Check dimensions, desk height, assembly, material and stated load limits on the product page. Ask for any essential missing measurement. Take short breaks and vary tasks; suitable furniture does not replace healthy work habits.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should a compact desk be?

It depends on your equipment and routine. Measure your laptop, screen and keyboard and compare them with usable top depth.

What is a good desk height?

It depends on your chair and body. Adjust them so your arms can relax and review Arboportaal’s general guidance.

Does a corner desk always save space?

Not always. Include the chair, drawers, walkway and room to sit down in your measurements.
