Side table next to a sofa: size and height
A side table next to your sofa should suit the armrest height, available floor space and what you want to put on it. Measure your seating area first. A table that looks right in a photograph may be too tall at home, hit a sofa leg or block your route through the room.
Start with three measurements
- Height: measure the armrest from the floor. Then sit down and decide where a tabletop would be comfortably within reach.
- Available space: measure the width and depth beside the sofa. Include skirting boards, sofa legs and any nearby door.
- Clearance under the sofa: for a slide-under table, measure the gap and locate the legs or crossbars that could get in the way.
Write these measurements down before comparing products. A table's overall height does not automatically tell you the height of its base or how far its top can reach over your sofa.
Choose a side table for the way you use it
- For coffee and your phone: choose a compact top you can reach from your usual seat.
- For books and remote controls: consider a shelf, pocket or rack. Check that it will remain accessible beside the sofa.
- For moving between seats: a table with wheels may be useful. Check for brakes and whether the wheels suit your floor.
- For a laptop: compare the usable surface with your device. Allow room for a mouse or notebook if you need them.
A small tabletop is not suitable for every task. For long work sessions, a dedicated workspace may be more practical than a table beside the sofa.
Slide-under table or freestanding side table?
A slide-under table has a base that can partly fit beneath the sofa, bringing the top closer to you. It only works when there is enough clearance. A freestanding side table sits beside the sofa and needs its own floor space. In both cases, check the entire footprint rather than only the top.
Unsure about the size? Place a piece of cardboard matching the base dimensions where you plan to put the table. Walk past it, sit down and check that you can still stand up comfortably. Painter's tape can also mark the outline temporarily if it is suitable for your flooring.
A compact example from our collection
According to its product description, the black mobile side table with storage pocket measures approximately 43 × 28.5 × 63 cm. It has four wheels, two with brakes, and a fabric storage pocket. It is an option to compare if you want a compact table you can move.
The overall height of 63 cm does not guarantee that the top will fit over your armrest. Check the gap under your sofa, the base position and the product specifications. Ask about any missing measurement before ordering.
Frequently asked questions about sofa side tables
How high should a side table next to a sofa be?
Start with the armrest height and your sitting position. A table beside the sofa should be easy to reach; a top sliding over the armrest also needs clearance. There is no single height that fits every sofa.
Will a slide-under table fit any sofa?
No. A low frame, wide legs or a crossbar can obstruct the base. Compare the product's required clearance with the space that is actually free under your sofa.
How do I keep a table with wheels in place?
Choose a model with brakes if you want to use it in a fixed position. Apply the brakes according to the instructions and check stability before placing anything on the top.
