How to repot a houseplant: a practical step-by-step guide

How to repot a houseplant: a practical step-by-step guide

Repot because the roots or growing medium need attention, rather than simply because you bought a new decorative pot. A plant in a nursery container can often be moved into a different suitable outer pot without disturbing its roots. True repotting starts with assessing the root ball.

Does it need repotting?

Check whether roots fill most of the container, emerge through drainage holes and affect how the mix behaves. A single visible root is not a complete diagnosis. Consider these clues alongside the plant’s growth stage and species requirements.

For routine repotting, active growth is usually a useful time. A plant declining because of damaged or persistently wet roots needs assessment first, rather than an automatic move into a bigger container.

Prepare before starting

  • A clean inner pot with clear drainage holes and room appropriate to the root ball.
  • Potting mix or another growing medium suited to the species.
  • A protective mat, scoop and clean tools where needed.
  • A suitable place for the plant to stand after the work is finished.

Work carefully around the root ball

Loosen the container gently and support the root ball. Do not pull on individual stems to remove a stuck plant. Inspect the roots before continuing. For healthy growth, move up modestly in pot size instead of making a large jump.

Replant at approximately the previous depth and fill around the roots with suitable mix. Firm gently without compressing it into a hard mass. Leave watering room below the rim and allow excess water to drain freely. Gravel at the bottom is not a substitute for drainage holes.

Care after repotting

Base watering on the species and the actual moisture of the new root ball. Check again before adding water. Record the date and mix used. Avoid adding fertiliser by guesswork: check whether the potting mix already contains nutrients and follow the relevant directions.

Avoid rushing with a little preparation

Measure the current container and assess how much space the roots occupy before filling another pot. Test the new inner pot inside its decorative planter, checking that you can lift it out later for drainage. An attractive combination still needs to be accessible for care.

Protect the work surface and keep the old pot nearby until you know the replacement fits. Keep discarded material separate from fresh mix. If the plant identity or growing medium is uncertain, clarify it before combining random mixes or fertilisers.

Do not change everything at once

After routine repotting, place the plant in suitable conditions and observe its development. Repotting, heavy pruning, extra feeding and a dramatic change of position at the same time make a reaction harder to interpret. Make additional changes for a clear reason, rather than as a default finishing routine.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove all the old soil?

Not routinely. This can disturb roots unnecessarily. The approach depends on species, medium and any existing problem. Establish why you are repotting before breaking up the entire root ball.

Can I plant directly into a pot without holes?

Drainage is harder to monitor that way. A suitable inner pot with drainage holes inside an outer planter makes draining and checks more straightforward. Do not leave water standing in the outer pot.

How much bigger should the new pot be?

Base this on the root ball and growth needs. For healthy growth, a modest increase is usually more sensible than a large jump. Follow guidance for your plant rather than applying one measurement to every species.

When should I feed after repotting?

Check whether the fresh mix already contains nutrients and what your plant needs. Follow the relevant dosage and timing instructions. Do not automatically add extra fertiliser immediately.
